The Best New Shows and Movies on Netflix This Week – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Polar, Incredibles 2
Ready to watch something new on Netflix this weekend? Here is a list of all the best new shows and movies released on Netflix this week.
There aren’t a ton of new releases on Netflix this week, but in terms of hitting percentage, many of the shows and movies out this week at least look pretty good. Zombies, assassins, vomiting robots, genocide and ruthless Italian royalty are all on the menu this week. Not in the same show, mind you, but if you skip from one episode to the next you can make it your own show!
Plus, we’re continuing to see Netflix’s love affair with gobbling up streaming rights to Pixar and Marvel movies before anyone else. This week, you can catch a couple big-name sequels that came out this past summer in case you missed them in the theater because you were too busy watching Netflix at home. (We don’t blame you.)
Below I go through all the Netflix releases this week, and if you’re looking for even more hand-picked recommendations, click over to our Watch This Now! page.
(All titles are out Friday, Jan. 25 unless specified otherwise. Looking for last week’s new releases?)
The Biggest Releases
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Season 4b
You never thought this show would ever end, but here we are! The final six episodes of the comedy that is both nauseatingly happy and dizzyingly zany (or do I have the flu?) come nearly a year after the first half of the season aired. This season, there’s a vomiting robot, a Ronan Farrow investigation of a sexually abusive puppet and a Sliding Doors parody. Like I said, zany. But in that zaniness there’s also some thoughtful insight into some of our societal ills buried underneath a mountain of pop culture references.
Movies about old guys who kill people are always fun for the whole family, and in this one, Mads Mikkselsen plays an assassin whose handlers decide he’s too old to continue work. So they send a bunch of people to kill him. But instead he kills them, I would guess. Vanessa Hudgens also stars in this as Mads’ new friend, and on the other side of things is Vikings‘ Katheryn Winnick as a very good-looking bad person. (Trailer)
The Blockbusters You Didn’t See in the Theaters Because You Were Too Cheap
Ant-Man and the Wasp
The Paul Ruddiest of all the Marvel franchises gets shrunk from the big screen in the second Ant-Man film, and comes with a more ass-kicking Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp. Wouldn’t it be nice if Rudd and Lilly got together and their love filled the world with joy? They’re both great. (Tuesday, Jan. 29)
The Incredibles 2
Maybe you skipped Pixar’s family of superheroes sequel because you were scared of being in a movie theater with a bunch of germy kids. Well, now’s your chance to watch it, provided you don’t have 50 children! (Wednesday, Jan. 30 / Trailer)
Kingdom, Season 1
Someone in Korea decided that it would be cool if there was a show that had the medievalness of Game of Thrones and the zombies of The Walking Dead, so they squeezed out this historical horror about a prince in the Joseon period who discovers a plague that turns people into monsters. And we’re glad they did, because this looks awesome.
Black Earth Rising, Season 1
A survivor of Rwandan genocide digs into her past to uncover the truth in this twisty and very serious drama. (Trailer)
9 Twisted Shows to Watch After Bingeing YOU on Netflix
The latest in the “very weird stuff happens to teens” genre is this Spanish-language film in which very weird stuff happens to teens. (Trailer)
Club de Cuervos, Season 4
Make it your gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal to watch this Mexican dramedy about a brother and sister who inherit a soccer team. (Trailer)
Medici: The Magnificent, Season 2
The follow-up to the Italian historical drama Medici: Masters of Florence jumps ahead 20 years in time, so it no longer stars Richard “Mum” Madden, but it does have that bad guy from Fear the Walking Dead as Madden’s character’s grandson. And it’s not completely Stark-less, as Sean Bean also joins the cast. How quickly will he die? (Trailer)
Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias: One Show Fits All
Only one comedian can pull off a flat cap, a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, and that’s Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. (Trailer)
