Even though The Flash has given us some of our favorite ships of all time, Season 5 has been a little light on the romance thanks to the appearance of Nora West-Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy). It’s understandable, considering it’s not every day your time-traveling daughter from the future shows up and accidentally creates a serial killer. Hopefully, though the romantic dry spell the show has experienced lately might soon be coming to and end.

TV Guide recently spoke with Hartley Sawyer, who plays Team Flash’s lovable doof, Ralph Dibny, and he thinks Ralph might finally be getting to a place in his personal journey where he’s ready for a real love interest.

“We’re working our way towards [a love interest],” Sawyers said. “He has to work on himself a little more before that really comes in, but he’s done a lot of work on himself. If that had come in last year, I mean how would that have turned out for him? He was not ready for anything like that. He’s sort of worked the kinks out of his system, where he’s going to be ready for that very, very soon. I’m excited for that.”

Who wouldn’t be excited? In retrospect, Ralph really had taken leaps and strides towards being a better person in his short time on The Flash so far. When you think back to who he was at the start of Season 4, that guy almost feels like an entirely different man, and the first person to point that out would actually be Sawyer, himself.

The Flash Cast Plays the Quote Game: Barry Allen or a Disney Character?

“I love how he’s progressed. The way he is now is sort of the way that I really saw the character being, but we wanted to start him where we started him last year so that we had all this space for him to grow and take him on this arc,” Sawyer said, casually throwing around the word jackass in regards to Ralph’s previous persona. “He didn’t have community, he didn’t have family before we met him on the show, and he’s very grateful to have that. I think that’s more important to him than anything.”

Now, it sure sounds like Ralph’s community might be adding a new, ship-worthy member. If you’re not on board for a romance between Ralph and Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) though, never fear. Sawyer assured us that The Flash is committed to keeping that friendship platonic.

This eventual romance does present an interesting question though… who will catch Ralph’s eye if not one of the girls already on Team Flash? In the DC Comics, Ralph Dibny’s love interest is one Sue Dearbon, a New York socialite who eventually becomes Sue Dibny and — spoiler alert — Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) was their best man. Could The Flash be ready to add Sue to the cast soon?

The Flash returns Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 8/7c on The CW.
